Dennis representing Anytime Fitness at the summit
Most of us would elect to rest up after facing cancer. But Anytime Fitness member Dennis Cockrell (Moscow, Idaho) was determined to join his friends for their annual climb of Mount Hood. He didn’t waste any time after his release from the hospital:
I started 2009 with a diagnosis of prostate cancer. Determined to meet it head on, I elected to have surgery on February 4. One day after being discharged from the hospital, my wife drove me to Anytime Fitness where I walked very, very slowly on the treadmill for a half hour. Each day I increased the length of time and pace until finally after two weeks my catheter was removed and I could crank it up.
I moved to the elliptical machines where I increased my cardio for an hour most days, with other days of up to two hours. I started wearing a backpack and added weight until I was carrying 50 pounds to further increase my cardio and strength. Not only was getting back in shape important, I wanted to continue to uphold a tradition of climbing Mount Hood with my friends the last weekend of April.

Thankfully, I was able to climb Mount Hood that April and Mount Rainier in July. Much of the credit goes to Anytime Fitness – the staff, the equipment, and the supportive environment.
Since then, I have been a regular at the fitness center, often wearing a backpack, always looking forward to my next adventure in the mountains. This July I climbed Mount Rainier again and am already thinking about next year’s climbs.

Q. When and where did you join Anytime Fitness?
A. February 2009 in Moscow, Idaho
Q. What do you like most about Anytime Fitness?
A. It’s clean, well maintained with new equipment, convenient location, and available for use ‘anytime.’ It’s nice to meet and exercise with other like-minded individuals. The very supportive and friendly staff creates the friendly environment for participants.
Q. What fitness goals do you have?
A. I want to keep hiking throughout the year, climb 2 to 3 mountains per year, and be ready for snowboarding season. This creates motivation to stay in shape year-round. A more daily goal is to stay fit, maintain a healthy weight, and increase my core fitness to ensure that I keep my level of fitness.
Q. What has been your biggest benefit from working out?
A. I feel better, have more energy, need only one wardrobe, and I have a more enjoyable time when I am climbing, hiking, or snowboarding.
